The GROW Model
Good missions don't fail because the work isn't needed or leaders aren't dedicated. They fail because no one showed them how to fund what they're trying to build. The GROW Model is KEA Canada’s framework for building the revenue capacity a nonprofit needs to fully fund its mission. We focus on how money is generated, grown, and sustained, and we walk beside you as you build the strategy, the relationships, and the confidence to carry it.
G - Grounded
Understand your current position before you plan your path.
The Condition it Addresses: When decisions are made without reliable information about true costs, revenue trends, and organizational reality.
When you’re grounded, your whole leadership team, not just finance, works from one honest picture of what the mission costs and where the money comes from.
R - Revenue
Design a funding model that fully resources your mission.
The Condition it Addresses: When fundraising is reactive, undiversified, and disconnected from what the mission actually costs to deliver.
When revenue is designed rather than chased, funding follows a deliberate plan built for your mission, capacity, and community instead of arriving deadline by deadline.
O - Outward
Build the relationships that generate lasting donor support.
The Condition it Addresses: When scarcity turns organizations inward, leaving them defensive, transactional, and unable to cultivate the relationships that sustain a mission.
When you turn outward, fundraising stops being an anxious ask and becomes the work of connecting people to a cause they already care about.
W - Whole
Leadership, strategy, and revenue working as one.
The Condition it Addresses: When finance and fundraising speak different languages, strategy is disconnected from revenue, and leaders are caught in the middle.
How every engagement begins: The Needs Investigation
Before we recommend anything, we get grounded in your reality.
A review of your fundraising data, plans, materials, and organizational documents, bringing together the work you've already done
A financial wellness snapshot that locates where you sit today
A conversation with you and key members of your team to understand priorities, capacity, and context
Identification of the funding opportunities with the greatest near- and longer-term potential
A practical action plan with recommended priorities and next steps, reviewed together so we agree on the path before walking it

Revenue strategy and financial systems are distinct disciplines, and organizations need both. The GROW Model addresses revenue strategy: how to fund what you’re trying to build. Strong financial systems (bookkeeping, reporting, and infrastructure) make numbers readable and decisions trustworthy.
FAQs
What is the GROW Model?
The GROW Model is KEA Canada’s framework for building the revenue capacity a nonprofit needs to fully fund its mission. It describes four dimensions an organization develops in sequence: Grounded, Revenue, Outward, and Whole. Together they map the journey from financial uncertainty to a strategically funded, mission-ready organization.
What do the four dimensions of the GROW Model mean?
In the GROW Model, Grounded means knowing your true financial position before you plan; Revenue means designing a deliberate, diversified revenue mix instead of reacting to deadlines; Outward means building the donor relationships that generate lasting support; and Whole means developing the organizational health to sustain it all. Each dimension builds on the one before it.
Who is the GROW Model for?
The GROW Model is for nonprofit leaders: Executive Directors, development and finance teams, and boards who want a clear, shared framework for building revenue capacity. It’s designed to meet an organization wherever it is, whether it’s stabilizing finances or scaling an ambitious campaign.
How do organizations use the GROW Model?
Organizations use the GROW Model through KEA Canada in several ways: as the backbone of direct consulting engagements, as the structure of the GROW Revenue Program, and as the framework underlying one-on-one coaching. The same methodology runs through each, so leaders work from a common language and approach.
